Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the classic sextet structure, and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the group went on a world-wide tour to promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album titled Then & Now. It was the band's first album that did not contain a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and singer Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis infection which hampered his singing.
